Long time Lorain resident and Lorain City Schools teacher, Anne Godlewski, envisioned starting a nonprofit program dedicated to providing new and expecting mothers with rocking chairs and books. Having dedicated nearly 25 years to teaching children in Preschool through Second Grade, Anne recognized and valued the importance of reading to and with young children at even the earliest of ages. Her kind hearted self and creativity in the classroom engaged students and fostered a love for reading.
Years that Anne did not spend in the classroom were spent as a stay at home mom with her two children. Anne had a strong sense of family and cherished every moment spent with them from rocking her babies to sleep, to nightly bed time stories. The special bond she created with her children was something she hoped all mothers could have.
Upon her anticipated retirement in the spring of 2018, Anne intended on dedicating her time to bringing her nonprofit vision to life. Unfortunately, Anne’s unexpected passing in February of 2017 left all those whose lives she touched devastated. Her husband and children took it upon themselves to make Anne’s dream a reality and so became Rock ‘N’ Read. All though Anne is no longer with us, her passion for education, love of family, and overall legacy will live on through the deserving Rock ‘N’ Read recipients.
The Rock ‘N’ Read program will raise the funds to purchase rocking chairs and baskets of books. A portion of the funds raised will go directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Lorain County’s SPARK early literacy program for Lorain City Schools.
Rocking chair and book basket recipients will be clients of the Mercy Resource Mothers Program who are most in need. Resource Mothers is a program that provides underserved mothers and their babies in the community with resource information to best prepare them to support their children from the prenatal period through age one.
